Superintendent Addresses Cafeteria Incident (October 2017)
The safety and security of our students, their families and our staff in the North Tonawanda City School District is of the utmost importance to us.
During a recent incident at the high school, cafeteria staff and building security responded quickly and appropriately as they had been trained to do. Our Code of Conduct and DASA policy prohibits the kind of behavior exhibited during this isolated situation.
Due to New York State legislation, we cannot disclose student identities or disciplinary actions, but we can assure the community that the proper measures are being pursued to the fullest extent possible.
The District and its staff take this behavior very seriously. We will continue to work with all involved, including the authorities, to ensure respect and civility between peers is paramount. In addition, we will continue to train and educate our staff in appropriate emergency procedures.
Students are urged to use the District resources made available to them on a daily basis to help them with any difficult interpersonal relationships and situations. These resources include our high school counselors, our resource officers and our faculty. Parents are asked to encourage their children to utilize these resources whenever necessary.
Working together, we can ensure a safe learning environment for all.
I want to thank the North Tonawanda Police Department for the professionalism they displayed during this situation.
