North Tonawanda is conveniently located between Buffalo and Niagara Falls at the junction of the historic Erie Barge Canal and the Niagara River. The Erie Barge Canal binds the city on the west by the Niagara River and on the south and east. The name "Tonawanda" was taken from the Tonawanda Creek, which flows into the Niagara River. "Tonawanda" is an Iroquois word meaning "swift running water."
North Tonawanda, with approximately 31,568 residents, is the second-largest community in Niagara County, and the 15th-largest city out of 62 in New York State.
Historically, North Tonawanda has been an important regional manufacturing center. Today, North Tonawanda is focused on waterfront development, entertainment and tourism. The City of North Tonawanda is known for its charm, small-town atmosphere, and its upscale businesses. Residents are proud of their school system, which provides a quality education while teaching students to become caring and productive members of society and their community.
