    Sharpen the Saw

This means, I take care of my body by eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just school. I spend time with my family and friends. I take time to find meaningful ways to help people. I balance all four parts of myself.

    Habit 6: Synergize

During the month of April and May, teachers will be looking for students who work well in groups and get along with others even when they voice different ideas. Students who can learn from other students' strengths are leaders in the classroom.

This month we have been learning all about working together as a team. We’ve learned the importance of getting along when working in groups and learning from each other’s strengths. Many classes created a puzzle where each student received a puzzle piece to individually design. They worked as a team to solve the puzzle and found pride in their accomplishment.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood

During the month of February, teachers will be looking for students who use whole body listening.

Often, when we listen we are preparing our response for when it’s our turn to speak. Instead of listening to others we worry about ourselves. This month, students learn how to focus on others first. Once that is accomplished , others can listen and care about us.

Next Assembly: Wednesday, March 14 @ 9:00 AM

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand Then to be Understood

I listen to other people's ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoint. I listen to others without interrupting. I listen with my ears, my eyes and my heart. I am confident in voicing my ideas!

    Habit 4: Think Win-Win

During the month of January, teachers will be looking for studens who think of a win-win solution between peer relationships.

Think of a friendship you have. Now consider "Who's winning in my friendship - me, or my friend?" Well that's silly because friendships aren't competitions and there isn't a winner or a loser in a friendship, everyone wins.

Next Assembly: Friday, January 26 @ 9:00 AM

    Habit 4: Think Win-Win

I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want. When conflicts arise, I look for a win-win solution.

Will YOU be nominated this month?

Habit 3: Put First Things First

During the month of December, teachers will be looking for students who show they are organized and follow their plan. Putting first things first can be a hard habit to conquer! It's easy to put our homework off and go outside and play, isn't it? Have no fear, we're in this together. Habit 3 reminds us how important it is to put the important things first then enjoy other activities. Work hard, then play!

Next Assembly: Wednesday, December 20 @ 9:00 AM

Habit 3: Put First Things First

I spend my time on things that are important. This means I say no to things I know I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized.

    Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

I take care of my body by eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places not just school. I spend time with my family and friends. I take time to find meaningful ways to help people. I balance all four parts of myself.

Sharpen the Saw means to have balance in your life.  The book Leader in Me by Stephen Covey talks about a story of a man sawing down a tree and not making a lot progress. "When a passerby asked him why he didn't stop sawing to sharpen his saw, he remarked that he was too busy sawing. Habit 7 reminds us that we are more productive when we are in balance - body, brain, heart and soul".

Parents: Describing the concept of Sharpen the Saw can be tricky but using a car analogy is one they understand: A car can't drive without all four tires, if one tire is flat, the whole car comes to a stop. Explain the four parts of each person (body, brain, heart, and soul) and how important it is to take care of each part to make them all work better.

Activities to encourage full body balance:

    • Body - play outside, ride your bike
    • Brain - balance reading books with watching TV
    • Heart - make a list of what makes you happy and do something on that list every day, spend time with friends and family
    • Soul - listen to your body and know your limits to staying healthy, keep a journal to jot positive thoughts down each day

Join us Friday, June 16th, for the Character Education Assembly starting promptly at 9:15!
